Spot UV Business Cards That Command Attention
Spot UV business cards are designed to be noticed the moment they’re handled.
Each card begins on a premium 19pt Soft Touch stock. A clear gloss coating is then applied only to selected areas of the design. The contrast between the smooth matte surface and the glossy raised elements creates both visual depth and a subtle tactile difference you can feel.
When light hits the card, the coated areas reflect while the matte stock remains flat. That shift in texture and shine gives the design dimension without overwhelming it.
What Makes Spot UV Different
Spot UV is not a full coating. It is applied precisely where you want attention drawn. Most customers highlight their logo, company name, or a key graphic element.
Less is usually more. Strategic placement creates a stronger impact than coating large areas. The goal is contrast, not coverage.
When designed correctly, Spot UV enhances the layout rather than competing with it.
Artwork Requirements
Because Spot UV is applied in a separate finishing stage, it requires an additional mask file along with your front and back artwork.
You will need to provide:
-
Front design file
-
Back design file
-
A black and white Spot UV mask file
Black areas in the mask indicate where the gloss coating will be applied. White areas remain matte. Clean alignment and accurate setup are important to ensure the final result matches your intent.
If you are unsure how to prepare the mask file, we can provide guidance before production.
Stock Options and Production Time
Spot UV business cards are printed in full color with bleeds and precision trimming. They are currently available with square corners.
Because the UV coating is applied after printing, production takes longer than standard business cards. Typical turnaround is around 10 to 14 business days, allowing proper time for coating and curing.
These are presentation pieces, not quick handouts.
Who Chooses Spot UV Cards
Spot UV business cards are popular with professionals who want a refined and modern appearance. They are commonly used by creative firms, attorneys, real estate professionals, salons, and boutique retailers.
The effect adds depth and texture without adding extra ink or color. The result feels intentional and well-designed.

Spot UV vs. Raised Foil
Both Spot UV and Raised Foil add dimension to a business card, but they create very different visual effects.
Spot UV uses a clear gloss coating applied over selected areas of the design. It creates contrast through shine and texture while keeping the original ink color intact. The effect is subtle from some angles and bold when light hits it directly.
Raised Foil, on the other hand, adds a metallic layer that sits above the surface of the card. Foil reflects light more aggressively and introduces a metallic color such as gold, silver, or holographic finishes. It is more decorative and visually dramatic.
Here are the key differences:
-
Finish
Spot UV is clear and glossy.
Raised Foil is metallic and reflective. -
Visual Impact
Spot UV adds contrast and depth.
Raised Foil creates a bold, luxury statement. -
Color
Spot UV keeps your printed ink colors.
Raised Foil introduces a separate metallic color layer. -
Tone
Spot UV feels modern and refined.
Raised Foil feels high-end and ornamental.
If you want clean contrast and subtle texture, Spot UV is usually the better choice. If you want a strong metallic highlight that stands out immediately, Raised Foil may be the right fit.
Not sure which direction works best for your design? We can review your artwork and recommend the option that will create the strongest finished result.
